A hat seems simple until you actually try to make one the right way.
At first glance, it is just a hat. But when you are building a pickleball brand, every product has to serve a purpose. It has to fit the brand, match the customer, and make sense for how people actually live around the game.
That is the mindset behind the development of the first SAYAS hats.
We did not want to make random merch. We wanted to create something people would actually want to wear. So before finalizing our direction, we put together a survey and asked our community what they liked most.
The feedback was clear.
People wanted two styles: a cream lifestyle hat and a trucker hat.
That response helped shape the next stage of our product development.
Why We Started With Hats
As SAYAS continues building out our product line, we wanted to create pieces that could live naturally within the pickleball community.
Our backpack is the bigger product story, but hats felt like an important way to introduce the brand in a more everyday format. A hat is easy to wear, easy to style, and one of the first things people notice.
But we also knew we had to be honest about use case.
Not every hat should be treated like a performance product. Some hats are made for the court. Some are made for everything around the court.
Our first SAYAS hats are part of that second category.
They are meant for the lifestyle surrounding pickleball: showing up, hanging out, traveling, watching matches, grabbing coffee, going to lunch after open play, and representing the brand off court.
We Let the Community Help Guide the Direction
Before committing to production, we created a hat survey and shared different design directions with our network of pickleball players.
We wanted honest feedback. Not just what looked good in a mockup, but what people would actually wear, buy, and feel comfortable representing.
The results gave us a clear direction.
The cream lifestyle hat stood out because it felt clean, elevated, and easy to wear off court. It matched the quieter side of the SAYAS brand: simple, premium, and versatile.
The trucker hat stood out because it felt classic, casual, and connected to the everyday pickleball community. It has a familiar shape that people already associate with weekends, courts, road trips, and time spent outside.
Together, they gave us two different ways to introduce SAYAS through headwear.
One is more refined and lifestyle-driven.
One is more casual and community-driven.
Both still feel like SAYAS.
The Cream Lifestyle Hat
The cream lifestyle hat is not designed to be a performance court hat.
That is intentional.
Cream looks great, but it is not the color you choose if your main goal is to survive long, sweaty matches in the sun. A cream hat will get dirty quickly if it is used heavily for court play, especially during hot days, tournament weekends, and intense drilling sessions.
So we are not pretending it is something it is not.
The cream lifestyle hat is meant to be worn around the game, not necessarily during the game.
It is the hat you can wear to coffee before open play, to lunch after matches, while traveling, while running errands, or while hanging around the courts. It is made for the lifestyle side of SAYAS: clean, understated, and easy to pair with almost anything.
For us, this hat represents the part of pickleball that extends beyond the lines of the court.
The community.
The routine.
The friendships.
The everyday life around the sport.
The Trucker Hat
The trucker hat represents a more casual side of the brand.
It feels familiar, approachable, and rooted in the outdoor culture around pickleball. It is the kind of hat that makes sense at open play, weekend meetups, tournament sidelines, road trips, and post-match food runs.
The trucker hat gives SAYAS a more relaxed option. It is less polished than the cream lifestyle hat, but that is part of the appeal.
It feels easy.
It feels social.
It feels like something you would see around the courts even when someone is not actively playing.
That balance matters because pickleball is not just about the matches. A lot of the culture happens before and after games, between courts, and in the small conversations that happen throughout the day.
The trucker hat is built for that world.
Why We Are Taking More Time on a Performance Hat
We are also working on a true performance hat for court play, but that product will take more time to develop.
A performance pickleball hat has different requirements.
It needs to handle sweat better. It needs to be comfortable during long sessions. It needs to stay secure during movement. It needs to dry quickly, breathe well, and hold up to real use.
That is not something we want to rush.
A lifestyle hat can be judged by fit, look, feel, and wearability. A performance hat has to be tested under more demanding conditions. It has to perform during drilling, rec games, tournaments, heat, sweat, and repeated use.
That development process takes longer because the standard is different.
For SAYAS, we would rather take the time to make the right court hat than release something that only looks like a performance product.
Balancing Brand Recognition and Wearability
One of the biggest conversations during development has been how much branding the hats should have.
As a new brand, we want people to recognize SAYAS. But we also do not want the hats to feel like generic company merch. The product still has to be something people genuinely want to wear.
That balance has shaped the design process.
We looked at full SAYAS wordmark options, slash logo options, different embroidery sizes, and different placements. A logo that looks perfect on screen can feel too large once it is embroidered. A design that feels clean in a mockup can feel too plain once it is on the actual hat.
The survey helped us understand what people were responding to, but the details still matter.
The final product has to feel branded without feeling forced.
The Hardest Part Is Making It Look Simple
Simple products are not easy to make.
When a hat has a clean design, every detail becomes more noticeable. The crown shape, bill curve, logo size, stitching, thread color, and placement all affect the final look.
If the logo is too big, the hat feels loud.
If the logo is too small, the brand gets lost.
If the placement is too low, the hat feels off.
If the embroidery is too detailed, the design can lose clarity.
That is why we have been taking the time to test layouts, review proportions, and think through how each design will look in real life.
A clean hat only works when the details are right.
The Blank Hat Problem
One of the unexpected challenges has been finding the right blank.
A lot of quality hats already have visible branding inside the hat. For some companies, that may not matter. For SAYAS, it does.
We care about the full product experience. If someone picks up a SAYAS hat, we want it to feel like a SAYAS product from the outside to the inside.
That means we have had to look closely at fit, construction, labels, interior branding, and overall quality before choosing the right direction.
This part of the process has made development slower, but it has also made the product better.
What the Survey Taught Us
The biggest takeaway from the survey was that people want options, but those options still need to feel intentional.
Not everyone wants the same hat.
Some people want something cleaner and more lifestyle-focused. Others want something more classic and casual. That feedback helped us avoid forcing one design to do everything.
Instead, we are developing different hats for different moments.
The cream lifestyle hat gives SAYAS a more elevated, off-court option.
The trucker hat gives SAYAS a casual, community-driven option.
The future performance hat will be built specifically for serious court use.
Each one serves a different purpose.
That matters because SAYAS is not trying to make products just to fill space. We are trying to build a product line that makes sense for how people actually experience pickleball.
What Comes Next
We are still refining the details: fit, logo placement, embroidery sizing, color matching, blank selection, and final sample quality.
The survey helped us choose the direction. Now the work is about getting the details right.
That is the part of product development people do not always see. The small adjustments. The sample reviews. The feedback loops. The decision to change something by half an inch because it simply looks better that way.
The first SAYAS hats are not meant to be everything at once.
The cream lifestyle hat is for off-court wear.
The trucker hat is for casual everyday use around the game.
The performance hat is still being developed for the court.
That separation gives each product a clearer purpose.
And for us, that is the point.
We are not just making hats.
We are building the SAYAS headwear line one product at a time, with feedback from the community and attention to the details that make each piece worth wearing.
